Input:
-Caffeine improves performance; have a cup of coffee an hour before a run
-Eat a fist-size of carbohydrate/protein an hour before running (e.g. bread/peanut butter)
-Drink 2 cups of water an hour before running
-Before going uphill: Stretch achilles and calves, especially if injury-prone
-How to run uphill: don't look up often; concentrate on where your feet are going; as soon as you hit the hill, reduce stride speed; concentrate on breathing; don't look for the top of the hill; attempt to put in the same amount of effort as on flat
-Form for uphill: lean a lot at ankles; keep hips forward; foot strike behind; knee straight forward and up, parallel with hill
-[Tried and proven] Bring breath into careful control, to get rid of a stitch: inhale with deep breathes, exhale suddenly and noisily, in rhythm with steps (i.e. inhale and exhale when landing on left foot)
-Eat something within 15 minutes of stopping
Reality:
-I only slept 3 hours last night
-I had 1 cup of coffee 1 hour before running
-I drank 2 cups of water 1 hour before running
-I ate 3 crackers with peanut butter 1 hour before running
Results:
-I only made it about halfway up before I nearly collapsed
-My breathing isn't completely back to normal, yet, after having been sick, which is what killed me :S, besides not having slept enough last night
-I did focus on my uphill stride, as detailed above, which felt rather interesting, as far as movement and muscle function went; must continue to try
-All that intake an hour before running did not help one bit; will skip that next time, maybe applying just the water part, since I do get pretty dehydrated, here
-I am unable to eat after exercising vigorously; maybe if I get this down better, I'll be able to apply that, in time
-Had a friendly, though limited, chat with the fellow who's at the place with the worst of the dogs (though today the temple had a must worse group of dogs in front of it that aren't usually there, ugh); he asked me if I run everyday; I said I try to; he said he walks everyday; he was walking on the road barefoot, carrying his shoes; and his breath smelled of liquor; highly entertaining
Bonus:
-[Tried and proven -- my own recipe] How to deal with dogs on the path/road: pull out your earphones, so you can hear what's going on and predict some of their moves; walk past, instead of speeding by; don't make eye contact; give them space -- in other words, stay on the opposite side of the road, so they feel less threatened; keep an eye on them, even once past -- they might run up behind you; if they get closer than is comfortable, point a finger at them and make a tsch! sound, or clap loudly; if they still pursue, turn full-face and stand your ground, making the loud sound -- do this as many times as is necessary, to show them you're in charge and not backing down, even pretending to take a step toward them; if they're particularly persistent/evil, pick up a rock/stick while facing them; keep an eye on them -- that eye on the back of your head -- until they're out of sight
