Updating programs

It seems like every time I submit to a program update, something goes wrong with the computer, so I'm now averse to and leery of updates and keep canceling or postponing them (although Windows somehow sneakily enforces them, despite my best efforts to run away). I know SOMEBODY is rolling their eyes at this, haha, but, really, if something went wrong every time you "updated" and programs started functioning badly and generally being problematic, and you didn't have tech support, you'd be avoiding them, too. Amen? Selah. :D
