A program that adds?

Is there a small, simple program I can use (for personal use) to record one track, then record over that one (while hearing the first one), then another over the two and so on? Using the default recorder to record one, playing and recording a second along with it, while the first one plays out loud, doesn't work -- it gets too shrill and distorted... :)
